Practitioner resources to support children who have experienced trauma

Parenting resources on understanding children’s trauma-driven behaviours are available to support practitioners working with families.

When children have been through a lot, they may develop behaviours that help them feel safer but can impact their ability to learn, make friends, or enjoy life.

Who are the resources for

The videos are valuable for any parents seeking to better understand the behaviours and communication styles of children who have experienced trauma.

The videos provide parents with evidence-based strategies to respond positively to children’s behaviours. There are five videos:

  1. Understanding big feelings
  2. Building your connection
  3. Using limits and consequences
  4. Shaping safe spaces
  5. Keeping your cool

When should the resources be introduced to families

Practitioners can identify safe and appropriate moments to introduce the videos to support parents as needed.

Posters are available to help practitioners introduce and share the videos with parents. The posters have a QR code that links to the videos.

Who developed the resources

The resources were developed by the Parenting Research Centre in collaboration with parents with lived experience, and Family Services practitioners and team leaders. This project was funded by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing.
